2011 Holiday Weekend in Lewes December 2 – 3

We invite everyone to celebrate the holidays in Historic Lewes at the Savannah Inn during the first weekend in December for the Lewes Historical Society Christmas Tour. The holiday weekend begins with the tour, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 3rd. The tour showcases the historic homes of Lewes which are decked for the season. Other local activities include art and craft show at the Lewes Yacht Club and fine art show at the Children’s Beach House as well as a Christmas Antiques Bazaar with one-of-a-kind treasures at the Rabbit’s Ferry House at the Lewes Historical Society Complex.

Saturday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. enjoy a complimentary cocktail reception on the front porch at the Savannah Inn which offers prime views of the Lewes Chamber’s Annual Christmas Parade! Your Holiday Cheer Weekend also includes a holiday memento to commemorate your special getaway. Room rates start at $140 per night and, as always, include a gourmet breakfast for two people in the morning.

Become a paranormal investigator for the evening with the Lewes Historic Society and investigate four historic building for ghostly beings. During this limited time program, you will learn about ghosts and the tools used to investigate paranormal activity, view first hand live data as it is being collected and go into the historic buildings and investigate for yourself!

Lewes Historical Society CRAFT FAIR

Saturday, October 1 - 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Fee: $5 per person

Come to the beautiful grounds of The Lewes Historical Society on Saturday, October 1 to enjoy a day of crafts, live music, food and fun! This highly regarded event showcases over 60 Craftspeople from the mid-Atlantic region. The feature artist for the July Craft Fair is local artist, Thom Anderson who handcrafts guitars out of antique cigar boxes.

Mid-Atlantic Sea Glass & Coastal Arts Festival June 25 – 26

The Lewes Historical Society is excited to host the second Mid-Atlantic Sea Glass & Coastal Arts Festival on June 25 & 26 at the Historic Complex. This event features a wide variety of sea glass artists and also includes other coastal arts such as decoy carving and several fine artists.

Thirteenth Annual Chautauqua Tent Show June 19 – 23

Join the Zwaanendael Museum and The Lewes Historical Society for the Thirteenth Annual Chautauqua Tent show where history comes alive! This event is fun and free for all ages and will feature American Historical Theatre actors: Neill Hartly, Elizabeth Michaels and Rene Goodwin portraying Franklin D. Roosevelt, Rosie the Riveter, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Step back in time with music from the WWII era and plenty of other exciting acts!

Historic Complex Tour

The Lewes Historic Complex Tour starts for the season

Friday, Saturday and Monday 1:00 pm $5

The Lewes Historical Society welcomes you to take a tour of the buildings on the historic complex. The tour will begin at the Ryves Holt House on the corner of Second and Mulberry Streets. One of the Society’s wonderful and knowledgeable docents will walk you down to the historic complex where you will enjoy Lewes’ rich history as you are guided through the Burton-Ingram House, the Doctor’s Office, Midway Schoolhouse #178, Thompson Country Store and the Ellegood House.

We can feel that Spring is in the air. Here are a few upcoming Spring time events to look forward to.

Lewes Tulip Festival April 15-16, 2011 Join the town of Lewes and The Lewes Historical Society in the celebration of our beautiful town’s Dutch Heritage during The Lewes Tulip Festival. During this event the Society will open a new exhibit titled “Beautifying Lewes.” This exhibit will feature artist’s renderings of local gardens during the Lewes Garden Tour. This exhibit will run through the end of the year. At 1pm, Saturday April, 16th at the Zwaanendael Museum there will be a lecture by Robin Krawitz about the Black DuPont Schools of Sussex County

British Car Show May 7, 2011 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Beautiful, stylish British cars of yesteryear, all displayed on the inviting, tree-shaded grounds of The Lewes Historical Society. This year’s featured marquee is the MG T Series, ca. 1936-1955. Enjoy food and beverages from the Society’s Hiram’s Pub, open on the grounds, and don’t forget the parade of cars down the streets of Lewes at the show’s conclusion.
